This is a part of worshiping God that has been practiced by Christians since the apostolic era - derived from what is typically known as an agape love meal. Put very simply, a lovefeast, in the modern Moravian sense, is the sharing of food and drink during a public service of worship and the singing of hymns to accompany the serving of food. It is an act of fellowship during worship, an acknowledgement of unity before God established by Christ through the sharing of a simple meal.
The first Moravian lovefeast took place on August 13th of 1727. It was an event that came as a result of a great reconciliation in the community. Members of the community were divided, and their footing unsure, but by some movement of the Holy Spirit, they were inspired to stay after worship that day. To pray together, to sing together, and to cry together. The food was brought out not as a central focus, but because they had been gathered together so long that they needed to eat! Today we continue the tradition, praying for the movement of the Spirit in our midst.
